Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, is a procedure that can be done to improve the shape and proportions of the ear. Otoplasty helps to create a more natural shape while simultaneously bringing balance and symmetry to the face and ears. Correction of any minor deformities on or near the face can have a profound effect on an individual’s appearance and self-esteem. Candidates for the otoplasty procedure may be those who may feel self-conscious regarding the appearance of their ears, may it be size, or placement on the head. These individuals seek to improve the appearance of any deformity. Although the operation is usually performed on children ages four to fourteen, otoplasty can still be performed on individuals of all age groups. Ears are fully grown by the age of four, so early surgery can aid in the prevention of the child feeling self-conscious regarding their appearance at an early age.
Prior to the procedure, all individuals must consult with their physician and must make sure they stop all forms of smoking, avoid certain medications indicated by the physician, and arrange for help during recovery. Otoplasty can be performed in a hospital or in an outpatient facility, with sedation and/or local anesthesia. In other cases, general anesthesia which renders the individual unconscious, can be used, but is not commonly suggested. After the procedure is finalized, the ears will be covered in bandages for protection and support. You will likely feel some discomfort and itching, which is normal, but pain medication is normally suggested and prescribed to get you through the first few days. If the discomfort increases, you would need to contact your physician, at which point we will gladly accommodate you as needed. A few days after otoplasty, your doctor will remove your bandages. Your ears will likely be swollen and red. You'll need to wear a loose headband that covers your ears at night for two to six weeks. This will help keep you from pulling your ears forward when rolling over in bed.
